Gotgreenyouthweek

This week (April 20-26) is National Credit Union Youth Week. The theme for this year is "Got Green?" and it’s being coupled with the tagline, "Grow It at your Credit Union."

CUNA and CUs are doing everything they can to help promote financial literacy to youth in America and they’ve made it easier for you (the CU) to do the same.

CUNA put together a range of materials for CUs to help promote this week to their members, including tips for marketing Youth Week to different age segments:

Younger than age 5

  • Use coin savers to help children learn how to identify coins and count money.

Ages 5 to 10

  • Give a weekly allowance to offer hands-on money management
  • Let children save for and buy something they really want.

Ages 11 to 14

  • Include children on shopping trips to teach them what things cost and smart shopping techniques.
  • Encourage children to use their own money to buy beyond-the-basics clothing and accessories.

Ages 15 to 18+

  • Discuss saving plans for long-term goals, such as education and cars.
  • Consider helping teens open a share draft (checking) account.
  • Consider encouraging older teens to use a debit card with their share
    draft account.

In addition to the education you already provide to your members, this week makes a great time to
talk to your members and their families about spending, saving and achieving financial literacy.

Please share with us what your CU is doing to promote National CU Youth Week.
